Tobias Rehberger
Self Seduction (2004)

Digital pigment print on photo satin 200gsm
48 x 28 cm [18.89 x 11.02 inches]
Edition of 289, signed and numbered.

About the work

This limited edition, Self-Seduction was produced as an edition of 289 works on paper, originally designed to cover a wall in Tobias Rehberger's studio. The 'wallpaper', which formulates a deceptively innocent pattern, is in fact created from endoscopic images of the artist's own internal organs - Rehberger often plays with the viewer's ideas and expectations in order to challenge preconceptions and routine 'thinking habits'.

About the artist

Born in 1966 in Germany, Rehberger lives and works in Frankfurt am Main, he studied from 1987-1993 at the Academy of Fine Arts, Frankfurt am Main with Thomas Bayrle and Martin Kippenberger, teaching sculpture at Frankfurt Städelschule. Working as an architect, painter, sculptor, designer and filmmaker, Rehberger has never been afraid to try out different media, materials and styles. In his art he tackles social, ecological and economical questions, and at an international level, Rehberger is considered one of the most challenging artists of his generation.

Selected exhibitions

Rehberger's major exhibitors include the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; the Moderna Museet, Stockholm; the Palais de Tokyo, Paris, the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis and Tate Liverpool as well as the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam. His work was included in the the Venice Biennale (2003), Manifesta Biennial & Chicago Museum of Contemporary Art and he has works in the Collection Sandretto re Rebaudengo, Turin and the Deutsche Bank Collections. Rehberger won the Golden Lion award for best artist at Venice Biennale in 2009.

Whitechapel Gallery editions are generously donated by the artists. All proceeds from the sale of these works directly support our exhibition and education programmes. As is traditional in editions publishing, prices will rise as an edition starts to sell out.
