About the work
Amikam Toren makes canvases, works on paper and objects that take found images and 'improve' or mend them. For example, a shattered milk bottle is painstakingly reassembled to a state of near completeness. Language, meaning and interpretation are key preoccupations in Toren's work. Here he transforms the bland graphics of signage into an expression of the emotional values of a shared existence. This limited edition has now been included in the Government Art Collection.

Toren was born in Israel in 1945. He is represented by Anthony Reynolds Gallery.

Toren has had solo shows at the ICA, London; Ikon Gallery, Birmingham; Serpentine Gallery; Matt's Gallery, London; Arnolfini Gallery, Bristol and Chisenhale Gallery, London. Recent group exhibitions include Jerwood Space, London, Royal Academy of Arts, London, Neuberger Museum of Art, New York, Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, Melbourne; Tintype, London, Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; the Venice Biennale; National Portrait Gallery, London; and the 2012 Guangzhou Biennale in China.
