About the work
Untitled - 1, 2013, 2015, was produced at Book Works, London, exclusively for the Whitechapel Gallery to accompany Anna Parkina’s works included in Adventures of the Black Square: Abstract Art and Society, 1915- 2015.
About the artist
Born in Moscow, Russia in 1979, Parkina’s collages and sculptures are a dialogue between the past and the present, highlighting social and political contradictions between the Communist past and the capitalist present of Russia. This dialogue between old and new is reinforced by her technique of creating geometric shapes and images from old newspaper and magazine cuttings, frequently featuring Soviet architectural structures. Her diverse range of work draws inspiration from the early–twentieth-century Russian avant-garde, in particular propaganda posters and photomontages by Aleksandr Rodchenko and El Lissitsky.
