Accompanying a major touring show between 2004-5 at Whitechapel Gallery and Castello di Rivoli, Turin, Faces in the Crowd takes Manet's The Masked Ball at the Opera as its starting point, focussing on his contemporaries such as Degas and then moving through the twentieth century to artists of today, illuminating the theme of the human figure and its expression of modernity. All the works featured include critical and bibliographical entries, plus a selection of extracts from historical documents and artists writings.
