Gary Hume and Sol Calero explore Fifty Years of Collecting

Edited by Whitney Hintz and Laura Smith

For fifty years, global insurance group Hiscox has amassed a remarkable collection of art comprising of almost 1000 works by international artists at the forefront of contemporary practice. With no single piece ever in storage this is a truly living collection, displayed around the world in the company's 35 offices. Outstanding works by artists such as Etel Adnan, Yto Barrada, Marc Camille Chaimowicz, Noah Davis, Nan Goldin, David Hockney, Joan Miro, Chris Ofili, Pablo Picasso and Prem Sahib can be found above photocopiers or on meeting room walls, enlivening the working environment with art that provokes thought or sparks creativity.

For the first public display of the Hiscox Collection, Whitechapel Gallery has invited two contemporary artists with works in the collection to curate two consecutive exhibitions that celebrate and acknowledge the collection's diversity and strength. Highly respected British painter Gary Hume and Berlin-based Venezuelan artist Sol Calero each bring new perspectives and insights to the Hiscox Collection through they personal selections of works.

This comprehensive catalogue explores Hume and Calero's selections with texts by both artists, as well as images of the works exhibited. The book also serves as a reader of the last fifty years of contemporary art.
