The edition takes the form of a photo transparency of several frames of a postcard from Nam June Paik, showing front and reverse, sent from Nam June Paik to Gregory Battcock and viewed by Tiravanija at an exhibition of Battocks' archive. The image, which was like a sunset over Paris, instantly made Rirkrit think of Chris Marker and a note that Paik had scribed to Battcock: ' It's trivia pushing towards the sublime', which turned Rirkrit's thoughts towards Chris Marker. Tiravanija was also interested in the idea of turning the simple images of the post cards in to a story and narrative through use of a still image.

The printed transparency is supplied with a wall-mountable Perspex and MDF light box for presentation purposes. This summer, the object - a phallus combined with a rough-hewn sword handle - was scaled-up to create a giant concrete sculpture which is currently on view upstairs at Whitechapel Gallery. Resembling a pagan fertility emblem or archaeological find, this 'life size' version combines echoes of ancient amulets with the purist aesthetics of abstract Modernist sculpture - its sinuous forms and white material call to carvings by artists such as Moore and Hepworth. In its conflation of penis and sword, the sculpture blurs metaphor and literalism in a way that echoes many of Lucas' earlier works (swords are often perceived as phallic symbols), for instance Two Fried Eggs and a Kebab (1992) in which a slang metaphor for the female body is made literal.

[[work end]]
[[artist start]]

About the artist

One of the leading figures in an outstanding generation of young British artists who emerged during the 1990s, Sarah Lucas has exhibited extensively both in the UK and internationally. The poetry of everyday experience and existence is often recorded and affirmed by Sarcevic, through the exploration of traces and gestures. His belief that a work of art is not just itself in the ‘here and now’ but also the record of earlier traditions, has led him to investigate art's relation to the past. Driven by an exploration into the nature of images, the making of art and the role of the artist, Paolini asserts that ‘to be authentic, a work of art must forget about its author'.

Giulio Paolini was born in Genoa, Italy, in 1940. In 1959 he graduated from the Giambattista Bodoni State Industrial Technical Institute for Graphic and Photographic Arts. He began his artistic research in 1960 and created the key work Disegno geometrico. In 1964, Paolini had his first solo exhibition at La Salita in Rome. He was invited by Germano Celant to take part in a series of Arte Povera exhibitions from 1967 to 1971. Paolini was nominated as Chevalier des Arts et des lettres in 1995 and then Officer in 2002. Paolini’s work was included in past editions of dOCUMENTA, Kassel, in 1972, 1977, 1982 and 1992. In 2004 Paolini together with his wife, Anna, and his closest collaborators, founded the Giulio and Anna Foundation.
