About the work

The limited edition Loose Fit 1 (Large/Black), 1999, 2014 was produced for Whitechapel Gallery to accompany her work included in the exhibition: Adventures of the Black Square: Abstract Art and Society, 1915 – 2015, 15 January – March, 2015.

About the artist

Angela de la Cruz was born in 1965 in Galicia, north western Spain. Her use of the language of both painting and sculpture creates striking works that combine formal tension with emotional presence.  She engages with the components of painting by challenging the stretcher as well as the paint itself.  Slashed, twisted and re-formed, her paintings become something more akin to sculpture.   Breaking these conventions, her works appear to mimic aspects of human behaviour or states of mind, making manifest a seemingly violent process.  She was nominated for the Turner Prize in 2010 for her solo exhibition, After  at Camden Arts Centre and also won the Paul Hamlyn Award  in 2010.

Angela de la Cruz  lives and  works in London and is represented by The Lisson Gallery.
