About the work

Beca Lipscombe has created Head Gear, 2021, a two-part edition comprising a silk crepe scarf and leather visor, especially for Whitechapel Gallery to accompany the exhibition Eileen Agar: Angel of Anarchy, 19 May – 29 Aug 2021.

Lipscombe takes Inspiration for her edition from a number of sources: Ivan Lendl’s legionnaire’s hat from 1990; the support structure created by the V&A’s conservation department for the display of Eileen Agar’s ‘Hat for Eating Bouillabaisse’; a sketch of a statue of a horse’s head by Agar, a lucky horseshoe leather stamp and the second version Agar’s ‘Angel of Anarchy’.

Intended to be worn together, the scarf and visor ensemble is a nod to Agar’s wearable hat sculptures and elan wardrobe choices. The silk scarf depicts Agar’s sketch of a horse’s head. The visor is embossed with a tiny lucky horseshoe, inspired by another of Agar’s drawings.

About the artist

Beca Lipscombe is a Scottish fashion and textile designer, printmaker, and one half of Atelier E.B. A graduate of Central St Martins, Lipscombe’s professional practice is multi-layered and draws upon a vernacular aesthetic. This sensibility was evident in both her eponymous label and her work as a freelance designer for various companies including Liberty, Chloé, Stella McCartney and Ann-Sofie Back.

Now, under the umbrella of their label Atelier E.B with artist Lucy McKenzie, Lipscombe operates in the space between design, art and commerce, responding to and critiquing the tensions generated by these uneasy bedfellows.
