Berta Fischer has created a series of seven unique wall-based sculptures, especially for Whitechapel Gallery to accompany the exhibition Christen Sveaas Art Foundation: The Travel Bureau, Selected by Paulina Olowska, 14 January – 8 May 2022.
Each work in the series is created in coloured acrylic glass. These gestural forms seem weightless, appearing to capture images of frozen movements. Made from synthetic, industrial materials, Fischer’s works hover between biomorphic, and liquid shapes. The sculptures are individually titled with a single word, evoking both organic and chemical states.
Berta Fischer creates polychromatic fluorescent forms using overlapping, tangled structures composed of acrylic glass, bent neon tubes, rope, and string. Made from synthetic industrial materials, Fischer’s wall-mounted and hanging sculptures use a process that includes CAD drawings, laser cutting, and modelling by hand.
Born 1973 Fischer has had numerous solo exhibitions at galleries in Germany and Denmark, as well as solo shows at James Fuentes Gallery in New York in 2012 and 2019.
