About the work
Fernanda Gomes has created Untitled, 2024 especially for Whitechapel Gallery to accompany the exhibition Lygia Clark: The I and the You, 2 Oct 2024 – 12 Jan 2025.
Gomes refers to her sculptural constructions as ‘things’. Formally exquisite yet intrinsically disposable, works are often composed of found and commonplace materials, which are folded, cut, glued or taped. For Gomes, the white wall is full of information, the object and the space it occupies, is part of the piece.
Her Whitechapel Gallery edition; a painted white square, strung on a small nail, comprises parts both physical and elemental. The cotton canvas, hand-painted to both sides with wall paint, is scored with a horizontal cut, joining a vertical thread. Minimal shifts of tonality and light, activate the empty space, articulating colour and light as matter.
About the artist
Fernanda Gomes b. 1960, Rio de Janeiro graduated from the Escola Superior de Desenho Industrial in 1981 and worked as a designer until 1991, when she began to dedicate herself exclusively to the visual arts. Gomes’ work occupies the entire space where she lives. Dealing with a wide range of processes and procedures, she articulates a language with an extensive and ever-expanding vocabulary. Through a palette of whites and raw materials, Gomes takes a radical view of colour, which includes light as matter. The gathering of the works in the space is treated as a work in itself, in unrepeatable exhibitions, which react to different contexts. Still, she believes in autonomous works of art, in their most primitive sense of a living object. The modest materials, the human scale, the playful dimension, contribute to an open and personal meaning for each observe
