About the work
Janette Parris has created Whitechapel Gallery, 2023 to accompany Life Is More Important Than Art, 14 June - 3 September 2023.
Parris’ edition for Whitechapel Gallery reproduces the artist’s digital drawing created especially for Life is More Important Than Art. Co-curated by Gilane Tawadros and Janette Parris, the exhibition explores the intersection of art and everyday life and the role of the contemporary art institution at a time of uncertainty and change. Through a complex rendering of the gallery’s iconic exterior, the artist’s process of deciding how much detail was needed to accurately reflect the façade speaks to Parris’ work within the exhibition as part of her series This Is Not a Memoir, interrogating the changing high street and landmarks interwoven with personal histories.
About the artist
Janette Parris (b.1962, UK) is a contemporary artist who uses everyday people as the basis for much of her work, often reflecting the pathos behind an individual’s desire to become successful and well known. She works across different media including drawing, animation, and performance (musical and theatre) to reflect a dry and self-effacing look at the world and how we are all performers within it. Parris captures the humorous essence of life but always notes the sharp melancholic edge that goes with it.
Whitechapel Gallery editions are generously donated by the artists. All proceeds from the sale of these works directly support our exhibition and education programmes. As is traditional in editions publishing, prices will rise as an edition starts to sell out.
