About the work

Miranda Forrester has created a special artist's edition for Whitechapel Gallery in support of the Whitechapel Gallery Errantry Fund.

This work 'A warmth rises from the ground' comes from a new body of paintings exploring water as a site for transformation, utilising poolside scenes and sun‑lit private exterior spaces where intimacy unfolds quietly but deliberately. Within these radiant environments, the work captures a moment of rest and respite, inviting the viewer to linger, to witness joy as fluid, relational, and radically free.

Here, queer Black women appear in communion with themselves, each other, and the spaces they inhabit. Water becomes a threshold where identity moves with ease, echoing the cinematic, literary, and musical languages that shape my practice. Light colours and painterly gestures translate a distinctly queer temporality, the slow unfurling of love, recognition, and desire. Drawing on Kevin Quashie’s understanding of Black culture as rooted in interiority, this painting positions quiet not as passivity but as a radical site of expressiveness. Quashie writes that “quiet is a metaphor for the inner life”, a terrain where Blackness is felt in its fullness, beyond resistance, beyond reaction. In this work, this ethos is present, creating space for vulnerability, sovereignty, and introspective power.

About the artist

Miranda Forrester (b.1997) is a figurative painter, living and working in London. Her work investigates the queer Black female gaze, placing black queer women centre stage in her works as a means of addressing their invisibility in the canon of western history of art. Forrester takes an honest and sensitive approach to convey delicate portrayals of Black queer women within intimate, domestic spaces, where they are the most expansive versions of themselves. Through doing so, Forrester explores the significance of domestic environments for queer people, capturing intimate and insular moments of warmth and tenderness. Within Forrester’s paintings, the figures are rendered with bold softness, occupying their space with authority and subtlety.

About the Errantry Fund

The Errantry Fund is a dedicated new philanthropic fund, developed by Whitechapel Gallery to support artists of colour, whose work has been overlooked or under-represented in the mainstream art world.

The Fund takes its name from the work of Édouard Glissant, the Martiniquan writer, poet and philosopher, who proposes ‘errantry’ or ‘disruption’ as a mode of freedom and resistance to fixed ideas of identity.

As part of this initiative, we are delighted to present a series of special limited editions, generously donated by artists, Miranda Forrester, Virginia Chihota, Rana Begum and Joy Labinjo. By purchasing these works you are making a direct contribution to the Errantry Fund and helping us support artists that challenge and reconstitute dominant forms of representation.

With thanks to: Miranda Forrester, Virginia Chihota, Rana Begum and Joy Labinjo.
