Paul McCarthy & Damon McCarthy
Coppermeal 2 (2005)

Lithograph on Paper
59.4 x 42 cm [23.4 x 16.5 inches]
Edition of 150, signed by the artist.

About the work

From the 1980s and 90's Paul McCarthy's stage sets, masks and props became sculptures, mechanised figures, video installations and environments that are often violently, sexually and politically charged. The limited edition, Coppermeal 2, was from a series of 5 editions produced by Paul and his son Damon McCarthy, to accompany McCarthy's 2005 exhibition at the Whitechapel Gallery.

About the artist

American artist Paul McCarthy's work reveals the darker side of American and European myths, transforming popular icons - from Pinocchio to Santa Claus - into disturbing, carnivalesque scenarios. McCarthy's provocative early performances in the late 1960s and 70s used his own body as the raw material to explore masculinity, where, drawing on performance art and action painting, he substituted the Viennese Actionists' sacrificial use of blood with ketchup and the Abstract Expressionists' paintbrush with phallic false limbs.

Selected exhibitions

McCarthy has exhibited internationally for over three decades and major retrospectives of his work have included the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; the New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York; Hauser and Wirth, London and Zurich; Tate Liverpool; the Whitney Museum of Modern Art, New York; Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven and Tate Modern. Group and solo shows have included V&A London; Centre George Pompidou, France; Saatchi Gallery, London and the Venice Biennale. McCarthy also has works held in the collections of MOMA, New York; Whitney Museum of Art, New York and Tate, London.

Whitechapel Gallery editions are generously donated by the artists. All proceeds from the sale of these works directly support our exhibition and education programmes. As is traditional in editions publishing, prices will rise as an edition starts to sell out.
