Bolivian-American Artist Donna Huanca invites the viewer to enter PORTAL DE PLATA (Silver Gate) to experience a multi-sensory environment in which she addresses the entangled relationship between colonialism, displacement and the processes of self-creation and autobiography in art making.
Huanca has created a circular curtained architecture containing silver antique objects in dialogue with paintings and sculptures. Between the 16th and 18th centuries 80% of the world's silver came from the "CERRO RICO" mine in Potosi, Bolivia, where the artist's histories of European colonial wealth accumulation, exploitation and resource extraction with her own family history. In PORTAL DE PLATA she has created a meditative space with each artwork playing their part in a constellation of intimacy, solitude and reflection.
The works are selected from the Christen Sveaas Art Foundation, one of the most pre-eminent collections of modern and contemporary art in Scandinavia.
