About the work

Simone Fattal has created Young Woman Reclining, 2021, especially for Whitechapel Gallery to accompany the exhibition Simone Fattal : Finding a Way, 21 Sept 2021- 15 May 2022.

Simone Fattal’s edition is a tribute to Henry Moore. For Fattal, Moore’s commitment to depicting the life of Londoners during the II World War, such as his numerous drawings of people taking refuge in the subways, resonates with her own commitment to representing the long, ongoing war in the country of her birth.

About the artist

Simone Fattal b. Damascus, Syria 1942, grew up in Lebanon. She now lives and works in Paris, France.

Fattal’s work – watercolours and collages as well as sculptures made from clay and bronze – exists between figuration and abstraction. She draws on sources ranging from war and conflict, to landscape painting, ancient religions and mythologies, Sufi poetry and the fragility of the human form. She explores the impact of displacement and migration as well as the politics of archaeology and excavation. Using frequently recurring motifs and forms, and just enough detail to make her characters discernible, her works construct worlds that feel as though they have emerged – temporarily – from history and memory.
