Edition of 45, signed and numbered

About the work

Sol Calero has created Frutas y culebras, 2021, especially for Whitechapel Gallery to accompany the exhibition Desde el Salón (From the Living Room): Sol Calero selects from the Hiscox Collection, 19 May - 15 Aug 2021.

This print, entitled Frutas y culebras  (meaning Fruits and snakes), derives from the artist’s 2019 painting of the same name. Calero’s distinct visual language draws upon visual clichés and imported ideas that we might associate with Latin America,  She uses stereotypically ‘tropical’ imagery such as exotic fruit and salsa dresses, inviting the audience to reconsider notions of creation, privilege and cultural appropriation.

About the artist

Sol Calero b. Venezuela, 1982, lives and works in Berlin. Calero’s practice stems from her South American heritage and migration to Europe. Calero is known for her vibrant paintings, murals and installations.  Calero constructs social spaces that use sensory engagement as a democratic entry point for audiences to investigate socio-political themes of cultural representation and national identity.
