The Travel Bureau: Paulina Olowska selects from the Christen Sveaas Art Foundation

The second of four publications chronicling a display of artist selections from Oslo’s Christen Sveaas Art Foundation at Whitechapel Gallery, artist Paulina Olowska reveals the true nature of a gallery as a travel bureau, where works of art are portals into destinations imagined by artists.

Her installation is inspired by Orbis, the largest travel agency in Poland. Founded in 1920, its offices, staff and posters offered prospective travellers a dream of escape. Olowska thinks of painting as ‘a beautiful metaphor for travel itself, a longing for a place'. Her display includes works which imagine only the possibility of travel while others picture a horizon of desire or depict artists who are already on their journey. Idyllic and fantastical destinations include 20th century plein air paintings of the Norwegian countryside to contemporary desert and mountain scapes, as well as surreal nightscapes and forest scenes.
